Smoke on the Water

Pucón – an adventure playground!

Set back from the beautiful Lake Villarrica and overlooked by the snow-capped Volcán Villarrica, Pucón is a crazy place fit for anyone and everyone. You really can indulge in as much or as little as you like; kayak on the lake to a private beach and picnic with a picture perfect sunset, or hike your way up to the top of big bad Villarrica and hear her rumble within. Need to unwind after that hike? Dip a toe at the natural hot springs, but don’t dip it too carelessly, less you’ll leave with one sandal less than you came with… R.I.P lil left Teva, may you find another at the end of the stream. Left wanting more? Then trek through the national parks, abseil through the canyons, go white-water rafting and cascade through the rocks and rivers. Zip-line over it all and hock a loogie at the explorers below. Ride a horse. Catch a fish. Kill a man, the list is almost endless (you can even ski/snowboard down the volcano in the winter).

Pucón is very well equipped for the humble tourist. There are an array of delicious restaurants to eat in, super-duper cool lake front hostels and a very well stocked supermarket (you can even find peanut butter here – a real godsend when you’ve endured soggy cheese salad sandwiches for over a month). There’s a lake beach to picnic on, dozens of bars to get boozy in along with a quartet of pie-eyed Ozzies, oh and not forgetting the constant ‘wish-you-were-here’ postcard view of the volcano pretty much every which way you turn.

This is not a place for a whistle stop tour. If you do breeze through town in a hurry I can assure you, you will leave wanting a lot more. Summer would definitely outshine winter here (literally and figuratively) but whenever you turn up, you are sure to have a ball!
